“You don't understand! I could've had class.
I could've been a contender. I could've been somebody . . . “

Marlon Brando, On The Waterfront (1954)

~

And I could’ve been Hemmingway, running with the bulls.
Boozing with floozies and smoking good Cubans.
Through it all he managed to write a novel or two.
I just don’t like how he composed his own final chapter.

And I could’ve been Elvis, dazed. High on drugs, sex, and mayonnaise;
eating peanut butter, bacon, and banana sandwiches on healthy
whole wheat toast.

Through it all he was crowned a king by his fans and managed
to sing a song or two.
I just don’t like how he played the lyrics in his final days.

And because of these and others
I have learned contentment
in knowing who I am.

I could’ve been:

The Dahli Lama,
reincarnate of Leary,
or Houdini roasting a weenie on Hollowed Eve.

Jim Jones, on his throne,
Applewhite, on the tail gate of Hale-Bopp,
or Charlie, ruling communes from his cell.

Could’ve been but
I was born to live the rebirth
of being myself.
